Job Description/Announcement

 
Search for Common Ground's (SFCG) mission is to transform how individuals, organizations and governments deal with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions.  With headquarters in Washington, DC and Brussels, we design and implement multifaceted programs that aim to resolve conflict and prevent violence. We seek to help conflicting parties to understand their differences and act on their commonalities.
 
Summary of Post
 
The Partners in Humanity program works to promote vibrant, constructive Muslim-Western relations. And our flagship project, the Common Ground News Service (CGNews), seeks to promote mutual understanding and offer hope, opportunities for dialogue and constructive suggestions that facilitate peaceful resolution of conflict by publishing and promoting articles by local and international experts in several languages.
 
The Indonesian Editor/Project Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Partners in Humanity, who is based in Ontario, Canada.  The position includes two main categories of responsibilities:
 
1-      Common Ground News Service (CGNews) Indonesian Editor:
a.       Identify, hire (as necessary) and manage Indonesian translator
b.      Identify and coordinate a back-up editor and translator
c.       Edit Indonesian edition of CGNews-Partners in Humanity
d.      Commission articles from South East Asia (SEA) experts - civil society, government officials,  writers, economists, academics etc â€" and source articles from SEA print and online media outlets (English and Bahasa Indonesia)
e.       Actively place articles in SEA media (English and Bahasa Indonesia)
f.       Maintain SEA subscriber list with an eye to growing SEA subscribers
g.       Provide input on articles on a weekly basis as a member of the CGNews-Partners in Humanity editorial board
2-      Partners in Humanity (PiH) Project Support:
a.       Contribute to PiH programme development in South East Asia
b.      Assist in the planning, implementation and measurement of any PiH projects based in SEA  - may include conference logistics, identifying trainers, partners and/or participants, project coordination, arranging translation of print materials and/or workshops, and other responsibilities depending on the nature of the project(s)
c.       Liaise between PiH and SFCG-Indonesia (where position is based) while contributing to Jakarta office development as may be appropriate
 
 
As job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position-holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key duties.
 
Skills & Experience
Essential
·         A Masters' degree, or 4 years related experience, in fields such as political science, conflict resolution, international affairs, sociology, or journalism
·         Working knowledge of conflict resolution methodologies
·         Exceptional English-language writing, reading and speaking abilities
·         Exceptional Bahasa Indonesia writing, reading and speaking abilities
·         Demonstrated editing ability, preferably in print media
·         Familiarity working with Indonesian (and other SEA) media, civil society and mainstream religious associations
·         2-4 years experience working with a multi-national team, ideally for an international organization . 
·         Ability to prioritize and handle several projects at once
·         Sound organizational skills, with great attention to detail required
·         Ability to meet objectives under deadline pressure
·         Requires flexibility in daily schedule to work extended hours as needed, including some evenings and weekends in order to communicate with colleagues in North America
·         Highly motivated and energetic
·         Proven entrepreneurial and self-starter abilities
·         High competence in office and networking software (word processing, spreadsheets, skype, databases, etc) as this position requires the ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods.

 
Desirable

Experience in the international NGO arena
A post-graduate degree
A broad understanding of South East Asian politics, culture, civil society, etc outside of Indonesia
 
Salary:  Commensurate with experience and education
